Context – Theme Research

WESTERN

Our holiday project is targeted toward our new theme called ‘Western’ for this project I will begin by researching the meaning of Western in various forms to broaden my choices when it comes to producing my Diorama.

Below are some definitions collected to help me further develop my ideas.

This definition describes the word in a very broad perception, such as ‘Means in or from the west of a region, state or country’ which can be interpreted in various ways which I will further explore in my research.

They also define the term as being used to describe things, people, ideas or ways of life that come from or are associated with the United States, Canada and the countries of Western, Northern and Southern Europe. This is the most commonly thought of perception of the word western as these locations are associated with Western movies focused around Cowboys and Indians of a certain time in history.

MIND MAP

The most essential stage of beginning a project in my opinion is to create a mind map as they’re extremely useful to inform yourself of the many possible routes to enter when planning your research for your subject at hand. In this case my theme/subject is Western, as this theme doesn’t necessarily have a broad spectrum of choices to go down I have linked the term to some various objects and environments which could potentially help when it comes to deciding on what I will eventually create for my final product.

RESEARCH

SALOON

To start off my research based around the theme Western, I’ve begun with quite possibly the most generic thought that comes to mind when thinking of the term. However I personally think this could be a great interior to 3d model as i’m quite interested in interior design for games and have some experience with interior lighting as my last project from the first year was the interior of an Asylum.

BANK

For this moodboard I have collected various images based around old western banks including exterior and interior displaying various layouts and objects I can use if I decide to go down this route for this project. Some of the images may not be perfect or even usable for reference however can still be potentially useful to bash together different ideas.

Jail

The moodboard below displays a variety of images focusing on an old western style jail, these include the cells, doors and other basic objects which could be integrated into my scene if I decide to choose this sub-theme. I particularly like this moodboard due to the variety in textures such as stylized and realism which can help influence my decision of texturing in the future.

Railroad

Below I have collected various images on railroads not just based on the old west however they are still relevant as I can use them in collaboration with other reference images to produce my own style of rails, I particularly like the bridge style rails as they give me the option to create a destroyed railway which I think could look rather visually appealing if done correct.

Native American Camps

Below is a moodboard based around native american camps in the wild west, I will most definitely not be using this sub-theme as it doesn’t particularly interest me however could be quite a visually appealing project if done correctly yet still I’d rather create something that appeals to myself and something that can stand out.

Prospectors mine

Although this idea is rather basic, I do like the simplicity of the assets which I could use to fill the scene such as rails, carts and lanterns. The simplicity can also help me focus more on the small details to create the highest possible quality for my scene/diorama.
